SUSPECT CAPTURED AFTER ASSAULTING AND ATTEMPTING TO DISARM SHERIFF’S SERGEANT

Twenty year-old Belfair man, Dustin George Sanford, was booked into the Mason County Jail for Assault 3rd Degree and Criminal Impersonation after he attempted to forcibly take a Sheriff’s Sergeant’s duty pistol.

“Even here in Mason County our deputies face these dangers on a regular basis,” Sheriff Casey Salisbury said. “The ongoing training of our deputies directly contributed to a safe outcome for everyone.”

Sanford fled the Belfair QFC parking lot after being contacted by the sergeant around 2:20pm on Thursday, October 20th.  A foot pursuit ensued and an alert citizen directed the sergeant to a carport where Sanford was hiding.  Sanford first refused to come out but then came out with his fists clenched.  When the sergeant attempted to place Sanford into handcuffs, Sanford resisted and tried to tackle the sergeant.  Sanford made repeated attempts to pull the sergeant’s pistol from the holster.  The sergeant defeated Sanford’s attempts and Sanford again fled on foot.

Sanford injured his leg as he fled and was arrested by responding deputies.  Sanford initially provided a false name to arresting deputies before giving his true name.

The sergeant sustained injuries that required medical attention, but has since returned to duty.

The sergeant is a twelve-year veteran of the Mason County Sheriff’s Office.
