K-9 Officers Graduate from Academy

Deputy Sean Dodge along with his K-9 partner "Kona" and Trooper Mat Wood along with his K-9 partner "Dilly" were among the officers honored at a graduation ceremony at WSP headquarters in Olympia on Tuesday. The officers and their K-9 partners attended the 239 hour K-9 academy which ran from September 24 through November 10 at the Washington State Patrol Academy in Shelton.

Still Feeling the Effects of Devastating Storm

Mason County is still feeling the effects of Monday's devastating storm that brought high winds and rain to Mason County. The Mason County Department of Emergency Management continues to coordinate with federal, state, and county agencies to facilitate assistance to those who need it, recovery and damage assessment.
Boater Education Classes sponsored by Sheriff's Office

The new boating safety law that takes effect on January 1, 2008, requires boaters age 12 and above to pass a boating safety course in order to obtain a boater education card. This card will be required before they can operate a motorized vessel 15 horsepower or greater. This new law will be phased in over the next 7 years, each year making it mandatory for another age group to obtain the boater safety education card before operating a motorized boat.

Mason County has been experiencing heavy rains and high winds following this weekend’s snowfall. The heavy rains and winds have caused flooding, mudslides, downed trees and power lines. Accordingly many roadways have been closed in Mason County. Several residents in the county have experienced flooding and mudslides. There is a high wind warning in effect for Mason County until 4 PM today.

Mason County continues to experience the effects of very heavy rains and high winds following this weekend’s snowfall. The heavy rains and winds have caused flooding, mudslides, downed trees and power lines. Flooding of the Lower Skokomish Valley is being aggravated by high tides, winds, continuing precipitation, and a dike failure.

UPDATE: Arrest made in Timberlakes Stabbing and Shooting.
At about 1144 hrs on November 15, 2007, Mason County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a request for assistance. They found a 28 year old Shelton man suffering from gunshot wounds and a 60 year old Shelton man suffering from stab wounds.

Lacey Man Dies when his Vehicle goes off Cliff

Patrick J. O’Connell, 47, of Lacey, died Friday, as his vehicle went off the roadway in very steep terrain off Forest Service Road #2469 about 10 miles west of State Route 101 northwest of Lilliwaup. The Mason County Sheriff’s Office was made aware of the incident at about 4:30 PM when the victim’s fiancé Katherine M. Milleson ,48, of Lacey, made a cell phone call to 911 advising the vehicle had gone off the cliff.

On Tuesday November 6, 2007, Sheriff's Detectives and Sheriff's SERT team members executed a search warrant at 480 NE Beitzel Drive in the Belfair area of Mason County. During this operation Sheriff's Deputies made two arrests. Marlys B. Samoy, 47, Belfair was arrested on charges of possession of controlled substances (Methamphetamine).

Mason County Sheriff, Casey Salisbury today announced a Sheriff's Office Open House to be held on October 20, 2007 from 12:00 PM until 4:00 PM at the Mason County Court House. The Open House is a celebration of the community partnerships the Sheriff's Office has established in the last 10 months citizen groups and the business community. Free hamburgers and hot dogs will be served by Mason County employees. KMAS Radio will be participating in the event.

A Shelton man is hospitalized this evening after being stabbed at his residence at about 1:00 PM today, Johnny L. Gullotto, 31, 524 Maple Street, Shelton, remains at Mason General Hospital tonight in satisfactory condition.
Sheriff Announces Narcotics K-9 Unit Program

Sheriff Casey Salisbury announced today the kick off of the Mason County Sheriff’s Office narcotics K-9 program. The narcotics K-9 will be assigned to Deputy Sean Dodge and once fully trained Dodge, and “Kona” will be utilized to sniff out illegal drugs. Deputy Dodge is an eight year veteran of the Mason County Sheriff’s Office. Deputy Dodge is a field training officer, boating officer, and a driving instructor. Kona will reside with Deputy Dodge and his family. “We anticipate Deputy Dodge and Kona will be used in a variety of settings from traffic stops, assisting detectives with searches, school applications when requested and to other police agencies upon request” the Sheriff said.

Roy Townsend was captured last night in Spokane Washington. TOWNSEND was captured along with his sister who he had been in contact with an "Evelyn" just prior to his escape. Evelyn WATSON (not pictured) is his sister and resides in the Everett area.
Convicted Murderer, Roy Townsend, 37, who was convicted in Mason County for the 1996 murder of Gerald Harkins escaped, from the Florence Correctional Center in Florence, Arizona at about 1:00 AM on Monday. Townsend's escape occurred with another inmate identified as Kollin Folsom, 24.
Sheriff Announces Formation of Search and Rescue Unit

Mason County Sheriff, Casey Salisbury announced today the formation of the Mason County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue Volunteer Unit. This unit will be led by the Sheriff’s search and rescue staff and comprised of community volunteers who will respond to search and rescue emergencies throughout Mason County and the State of Washington.

On Thursday August 10, 2007 at about 1146 hrs Mason County deputies were dispatched to Green Diamond Resource property located about 8.5 miles west of Shelton off the Cloquallum Road. According to initial reports suspects were in the woods stealing salal brush, a specialized forest product.
Man Arrested After Firing Shots Toward Officers

A 34 year old Shelton man is in custody after firing at least one shot in the direction of Sheriff’s deputies Monday night. Jess Daniel Brownfield, 34, of Shelton, was booked into the Mason County Jail this morning after a five hour stand off, on outstanding warrants, unlawful possession of a firearm and attempted murder.
WSP Turns County Road Collisions Over To Sheriff in 2008

The Washington State Patrol has notified Sheriff Casey Salisbury that they will no longer investigate non-injury collisions on County Roads starting July 1, 2008. In a previous letter dated February 1, 2007, WSP Chief John Batiste informed Sheriff Salisbury the cutoff date would be January 1, 2008. However, on May 15, 2007, Governor Christine Gregoire signed ESHB 1094 into law which stated in part “During the fiscal year 2008, the Washington State Patrol shall continue to perform traffic accident investigations on Thurston, Mason and Lewis county roads and shall work with the counties to transition the traffic accident investigations on county roads to the counties by July 1, 2008.”
